Description
Materials relating to the novel Roots, by Alex Haley, including reference to the ship, "Lord Ligonier", Annapolis, 1767, newspaper clippings, photographs, manumissions, and estate inventories. This collection includes letters written between archivist Phebe Jacobsen and Alex Haley during his research. The collection also pertains to publicity from the period of the 1977 television miniseries, and an exhibit about Roots which demonstrated the Maryland State Archives' role in helping Alex Haley to document his genealogy. Finally, a series of photographs taken at Annapolis City Dock at the 1981 dedication ceremony for the Kunta Kinte-Alex Haley Memorial sculpture are included.
