Description
Kane-Butler Genealogy, History of a Black Family, by Agnes Kane Callum, 1979; St. Mary's College of Maryland, Class of 2008 Commencement Program listing Agnes Kane Callum's honorary degree, Doctor of Humane Letters (see p. 4); photographs of US Colored Troops medal (obverse, reverse, side views depicting name of awardee).
History
The medal was in the possession of an acquaintance of Ms. Callum's whose ancestor, a Gilbert Harris, SGT, USCT, 2nd Cavalry, Company F, had been awarded it. The Latin verse reads: "Ferro Iis Libertas Perveniet". It may be translated perhaps as, "Liberty came to them by the sword."
