Description
Compass, made by William J. Young, Philadelphia, number 3875, with tripod, and surveyor's chains, ca. 1865. Collection includes slides taken in 1982 of "Compton Basset", possibly built ca. 1789 by Hill family. Slides include chapel used for Catholic services during the 18th century and a surveyor's desk said to have belonged to Clement Hill, surveyor general of Maryland. William J. Young began making compasses ca. 1830. After 1850, he started numbering them, beginning with 3000. The company name changed in 1870.
