Description
Replevined Frederick County Court Papers: a collection of over 400 folders spanning over a century and containing an array of different documents generated by the workings of the Frederick County Court handling mostly civil not criminal matters. The issues most often are debts, obligations, resurveys, petitions, injunctions, judgments, etc. A number are warrants directing the County sheriff to produce named individuals at the next session of court. There are lists of jurors, justices of the peace, appointments, licenses of taverns, for operating ferries, for hawkers, peddlers, even horse races. Of genealogical interest are the number of cases of illegitimacy, usually naming both parents and sometimes giving the name and birthdate of the child. There is a list of the children of Thomas Gilbert (ca 1798) which was prepared for an auditor, a few manumissions and bills of sale for slaves. The individual folders are labeled as to type of document and names of the principals involved.
