History
The Bernheim Sketchbook contains 23 primitive watercolor vignettes of daily life in the US administered Confederate prisoner of war camp at Point Lookout, Maryland. The name M. S. Bernheim is lightly inscribed on the cover.

Morris S. Bernheim (1842-1879), a native of Philadelphia, enlisted at the age of nineteen in Company G, 17th Mississippi Infantry. He was captured near Fredericksburg, Virginia on March 5, 1865 and sent to Point Lookout. His stay was brief, ending on June 7, 1865 one day after a visit to the camp from his sister and father.

Although Bernheim's name appears on the cover of the sketchbook, there is no proof that he was the artist. The sketchbook has been attributed to John J. Omenhausser (1831-1877) who was captured near Petersburg on June 15, 1864, and served nearly a year's captivity at Point Lookout.
