History
The Charles Dell Photographic Collection consists of two groups of photographs: the first being pictures of the U. S. Naval Academy buildings and the second being pictures of various ships, mostly America naval vessels. Ernest Flagg, a New York architect, designed the master plan in the 1890s for the Naval Academy buildings. A concise summary of Flaggs’s efforts is given in Architecture in Annapolis: A Field Guide, 2nd ed., Marcia M. Miller and Orlando Ridout V eds., Maryland Historical Trust Press, Crownsville, MD 2001. The Dictionary of American Naval Ships provides historical summaries of naval ships and can be accessed online at: Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships
