Description
Surveyor's transit and tripod. The transit is inscribed: "A.J. Aloe Co St. Louis 0156" and "PAT 7-24-1917." The transit is housed in its wooden original box; a base and protractor are also kept in the box. Albery Sidney Aloe (1842-1893) founded the firm of A.S. Aloe (1867-1876), which by 1885 became named A.S. Aloe & Co. This transit is based on the patent (#1,234,520) for a combined level and transit granted on July 24, 1917 to Adolph Wissler (1886-1926), the St. Louis instrument maker who made many of the surveying instruments sold by Aloe.
