History
The present St. John the Evangelist Parish in Frederick is the direct successor of the small congregation, served by Father John Williams S.J., who in 1763 erected St. John's Chapel in Frederick Town. Catholics in this area of Maryland and Northern Virginia had been attended in previous years by members of the Society of Jesus from St. Thomas Manor in Charles County. Once St. John's was established with a stationed clergyman it was to become the mother parish of churches in the surrounding area of Western Maryland and Northern Virginia.

Extant records of St. John's begin in 1811 under the rectorship of Father Francis Maleve. These first records have been transcribed into two typed notebooks by Miss Mary Myers.

Because of the complexity of the history of St. John's and institutions it has generated, we have included on the microfilm several pages from volume 1 of J. Thomas Scharf's History of Western Maryland which describes the parish history.
