Like members of other Catholic churches in northern Frederick County, persons in the Poplar Fields area were first served by the Jesuit missions of southern Maryland. About the times that Poplar Fields became Emmitsburg (1786), Father Mathew Ryan, on his way through the village, suggested that a church be built there. The small chapel was begun in 1793, attended for a brief time by priests at Frederick and Conewago. Then Father Ryan was appointed first resident priest. In 1841 a newer and larger church replaced the 1793 structure and soon thereafter the president of Mount St. Mary's College became rector of St. Joseph's in addition to his other duties.
The church was placed in charge of the Fathers of the Mission (founded by St. Vincent de Paul) in 1852 and was the center for organized charity in the United States in 1981. St. Joseph's continues to be served by the Vincentian Fathers Eastern Province, and the parish has been separated from Mount St. Mary's College. |
