History
This church originated at Elizabethtown and was know after 1806 as German St. John's Church. Later it was called the Lutheran Church in Hagerstown and finally St. John's Church. St. Mathews German-English Evangelical Lutheran Church was a separate congregation. When the church closed in 1917, the records were deposited at St. John's and some of its small congregation joined that church.
