According to those versed in the history of Mount Washington, the shrine of the Sacred Heart firtst occupied the structure built in 1855 by St. John's German Reformed Church. In 1856 the church and grounds became part of Mount Washington Female College. During the Civil War the church, known locally as Union Chapel, was shared by several denominations. In 1867 it finally came into the hands of the Sisters of Mercy who purchased the property for their school and deeded the church, which they called St. Agnes Chapel, to the Archbishop. It was soon thereafter organized into a new parish carved from the area then served by St. Marys Govans, and named Sacred Heart of Jesus. In 1917 a larger church was built across the road from the small frame chapel, and within a few years the parish was renamed the Shrine of the Sacred Heart. |
