St. Ignatius Church in Hickory was founded as a Jesuit mission after 1779. Part of the present chapel structure dates from the original chapel built in 1792. It became an established parish in 1815 with the appointment of Reverend Roger Smith as pastor. In his book, St. Ignatius, Hickory And Its Missions, Clarence V. Joerndt mentions that the earliest records might be lost. The extant records date from 1817.
St. Ignatius became parent of numerous missions in the surrounding areas. A particularly close relationship was formed with the mission of St. Margaret in Bel Air. From 1910-1970 records of St. Ignatius were recorded among those of St. Margaret, and St. Ignatius was designated officially as a mission of the latter church in 1924. By 1971, St. Margaret and St. Ignatius had become separate parishes and their archives beginning in 1970 were also kept separately. |
