Located in the eastern suburbs of Baltimore, St. Anthony of Padua Parish was dedicated in 1885 to serve the expanding area called Gardenville. The congregation was largely composed of immigrants from Bavaria and Hesse Darmstadt and had initially been served by Fathers from St. Joseph Fullerton, St. James', or St. Michael's. Until the Redemptorist Fathers took charge in 1886, Father Charles Damer was acting rector. He was succeeded by Father August Weisser CCSR who labored with the parish for the next twelve years, during which time a school and convent were built.
The Redemptorists were relieved of the care for St. Anthony in 1898. As the new century began the neighborhood of St. Anthony continued to grow rapidly so that St. Anthony became parent of the following parishes: St. Dominic, 1906; St. Michael, 1914; Shrine of the Little Flower, 1926; St. Francis of Assisi, 1927, and St. Ursula, 1933. |
