The Journal began publication February 25, 1976 [v. 1, no. 6] and ceased July 30, 1980 [v. 5, no. 31]. It was published weekly. The newspaper continues the Caroline County Journal (Denton: 1976).

The Journal was first issued as the Caroline County Journal on January 6, 1976 by Joseph Goldstein. He published the paper until February 19, 1976 when it was announced that the paper would be discontinued. The newspaper was purchased by Emory Dobson, Stewart Dobson, and Adelaide Warfield who issued the paper as the Journal on February 25, 1976. Shortly thereafter, John Dobson joined the paper as the fourth partner. The Journal became affiliated with Independent Newspapers, Inc., January 1, 1977. The paper was discontinued after the issue of July 30, 1980.

A Federalsburg-Preston edition was published from August 9, 1978 until September 27, 1978.
