The Cumberland Civilian was published beginning January 18, 1840 [v. 13, no. 42]; April 7, 1846 [v. 1, no. 1] to August 22, 1851 [v. 8, no. 46]. It was published weekly, [December 1847]-1851; weekly, 1840-[July 23, 1842]; semiweekly, [April 7, 1846-November 1847]. It was also published as the Semi-weekly Civilian. The newspaper began renumbering with the issue of April 7, 1846 [v. 1, no. 1]. The newspaper continues the Phoenix Civilian (Cumberland: 1833) and was continued by the Cumberland Miner's Journal (Cumberland: 1851).

Microfilming of these newspaper was made possible through funds provided by the Maryland State Archives and the United States Newspaper Program of the Library of Congress and the Office of Preservation, National Endowment for the Humanities.
