Description
Baltimore Infirmary medical case book attributed to Dr. Edward Tull for the period of 1853[?] to March of 1854. Each of the 334 indexed case histories feature the patient's name, description of illness, treatment and outcome. Patient population ranges from recent immigrants and laborers to African-American sailors and servants (possibly slaves). Medical conditions include dysentry, dropsy, pneumonia, and insanity.

The Baltimore Infirmary, the forerunner of University of Maryland Hospital and the University of Maryland Medical System, was opened in 1823 and operated until 1897. Located on the corner of Lombard and Greene streets, the Infirmary was the first hospital founded by a medical school (the University of Maryland Medical School) for the express purpose of clinical instruction. The School of Medicine was the first in the nation to open its hospital wards for bedside teaching, a major advance in medical education.

History
J. Emory Tull attended the University of Maryland School of Medicine, graduating in 1855. Dr. Tull remained in Baltimore, practicing at the Infirmary until 1859 when he set up a practice in Somerset County, Maryland. By 1865, he was married to Elizabeth Lee Freeman, native of Virginia, and they had two children, a son, Edward Emory Tull, who graduate from the School of Medicine in 1887, and a daughter, Willie B. S. Tull. J. Emory Tull died in 1873 at the age of 50 and his will was probated in Somerset County on November 19, 1873. The inventory of his estate compiled in 1874 list several pages of debts owned to Dr. Tull at the time of his death, probably patients in his practice. A codicil to his will written in October 1873 provides for a family burial ground near his house for himself and his descendants.
