Description
Genealogical materials, Latchford papers, compiled in the late 1990s, containing the history and genealogy of the Latchford descendants. The John D. Latchford file contains family papers and anecdotal information about the Latchford descendants. The Carter file contains anecdotal information about the descendants of Joseph F. Carter and the Carter Car Company.

The materials were assembled by John Latchford Beck, great-grandson of John D. Latchford, and Peter M. Kranz, paleontologist. The collaboration was brought about by Dr. Kranz's interest in discovering information about the original discovery of Maryland's official state dinosaur, Astrodon johnstoni. The original discovery was made in November 1858 in an iron mine on the property of John D. Latchford in Muirkirk, Maryland. This fact resulted in a search for Latchford descendants in order to discover more information about the original fossil find. These materials are the result of that search.
