F[rederic] Garner Ranney served as the archivist for the Maryland Episcopal Diocese (1960-2001) and reference librarian for the Maryland Historical Society (1953-1956). A Phi Beta Kappa graduate and the winner of the Garrison Prize for poetry at Harvard (1942), Ranney served as a Naval intelligence officer in London (1942-1945) with the primary responsibility of decoding top secret messages between FDR and Winston Churchill.
Grace Clagett (Clagett familiy of Keokuk, Prince George's County , Md), the mother of Garner Ranney, was a concert pianist and a music critic (fl. 1900-1920). Material relating to her career resides at the Peabody Library in Baltimore.
James Winship Lewis served approximately fifty years as a church organist for various Maryland congregations. Lewis also taught English at the Baltimore City Community College. He directed Baltimore's Handel choir from 1948-1960 The Choir still exists as a non-profit organization and the oldest community choral society in the State of Maryland. Lewis promoted the annual performances of Handel's Messiah, now the second longest such series in the country. |
