Description
This collection of items relating to folk music in Maryland and Pennsylvania is primarily composed of reel-to-reel tapes of broadcasts of folk music and religious programs, some of which were aired on WASA-AM in Havre de Grace, Md. Prominent performers on these broadcasts include Bev King, E.C. and Anna Ball, the Debusk-Weaver Family, the Carroll County Ramblers, the High Ridge Mountain Boys, the Little Wonders (a gospel-singing group from Havre de Grace) and Ola Belle Reed. Some of the other reel-to-reel tapes are recordings of folk group performances at the Maryland Folklife Festivals of 1976 and 1978 and performances recorded by the Folklore Society of Greater Washington. There are many videotapes of sights in Baltimore and Maryland, such as Lexington Market, the Fish Market, and the Memorial Stadium. There are also slides of visual and performing arts events across Maryland. The Ola Belle Reed component of this collection consists of articles of clothing worn by Ola Belle (1915-2002), newspaper clippings, correspondence, songbooks and hymnals, long-playing (LP) records, an autoharp, and photographs. At the present time, the Maryland State Archives does not have the equipment necessary to allow patrons to view the items in the following formats: reel-to-reel, Beta, 16mm and 35mm film, and LP records.

The inventory provided lists the item number, according to the small labels affixed to each item, as well as the medium, a description of the contents, and a date, if available.

Please note: This collection was transferred to the care of University of Baltimore County Library in November 2014. Please contact UMBC Special Collections for access to the Maryland Traditions Collection.

History
Founded in 1967, the Maryland State Arts Council supports the arts in Maryland through the awarding of grants and the development of its own cultural programs. In the mid-1970s, the MSAC provided funding for a series of Maryland Folklife Festivals, each held in a different location in Maryland. The 1976 Festival was held at the Carroll County Farm Museum in Westminster, Md. The 1978 Festival was held at the Wye Institute near Queenstown, Md., and focused on the folk traditions of the lower Eastern Shore, with numerous music programs, craft demonstrations, film screenings, panel discussions, and educational programs. In 2104, the Maryland State Archives transferred all materials from this collection to the University of Maryland Baltimore County's Albin O. Kuhn Library Special Collections to consolidate the Art Council's folklife materials at one location. UMBC has cataloged these materials under the Maryland Traditions Collection.
