Overlap of material type and content may exist between series. Maryland State Archives staff minimally imposed order on the records, with the goal of preserving as much of the original intent as may have been present. Where items were rearranged, it was with the intention of improved organization of materials for the purpose of access. Except in the case of Series 4, unit numbers assigned correspond to individual boxes rather than individual items or folders. Each entry will contain a box list, delineating the items/files the box contains. Unless otherwise noted, bulleted items in an entry correspond to an individual folder; however, folders vary greatly in size depending on contents. Series 4 items were accessioned individually. Bulk dates for this collection are 1960-1999, however there are record materials that fall either before or after those dates. If dates are not listed they were not readily apparent at the time of processing.
History

This collection is comprised of some surviving records and part of the library from Chestnut Lodge Hospital in Rockville, Maryland.

Milwaukee surgeon Dr. Ernest L. Bullard opened the facility as Chestnut Lodge Sanitarium in 1910. In the 1930s, Chestnut Lodge became a psychiatric hospital known for pioneering therapies by hiring acclaimed experts including psychotherapist Frieda Fromm-Reichmann. The hospital building was destroyed by fire on June 7, 2009.
