Description
Records of the Supreme Bench of Baltimore, consisting of files relating to bar admissions, disbarments, and appeals of criminal and other cases. A number of court administration records are also featured.

Series 1, Admissions to the Bar, features petitions on behalf of individuals seeking admittance to the Bar. Date range: 1867-1955 (6 clamshells).

Series 2, Disbarments and disciplinary matters, contains disbarments and appeals, notices of suspension, and other documentation pertaining to actions brought forward by the Bar Association and other entities. A few voluntary resignations are also found within the series. Date range: 1872-1969 (16 clamshells)

Series 3, Appeals, consists of courts cases pertaining to a broad range of subjects. Date range: 1865-1965 [1932-1935 not included in original transfer of records; whereabouts unknown to court staff] (8 clamshells)

Series 4, Court Administration Papers, reflect the daily activities of the Court, from the hiring of stenographers to the appoinment of judges. Date range: 1867-1969. (9 clamshells)

Series 5, bound volumes of the Supreme Bench of Baltimore City/Circuit Court of Baltimore City and miscellany, 1906-1997 Collection also includes a copy of Histories of the Bench & Bar, Judges John Carrol Byrnes, Editor (Baltimore: Baltimore Courthouse and Law Museum Foundation, 1997), stored at 00/27/14/57.

History
Material transferred from the Baltimore City Circuit Court in December 2004 and initially assigned to Transer: T917 (Admissions to the Bar and Disbarment Proceedings) 1867-1969 1 box (bankers box) and T1696 (Administrative Papers) 1867-1969 4 boxes (bankers boxes). Records transferred to Special Collections for series level processing and rehousing.
