Description
This contains photographs and an inventory of the Willman Spawn Collection, a collection of bindings of government court records - primarily from the 18th century - that were disbound in the second half of the 20th century in accordance with contemporary conservation techniques. The text blocks were deacidified, laminated, rebound, and stored separately from their bindings. Dr Spawn utilized this collection when he visited the Archives in the 1960s to continue his research on 17th and 18th century bindings.

This collection also contains photographs of other bindings identified by Dr Spawn as the product of colonial or early American binders, and unrelated bindings with binder's tickets.

Over the summers of 2009 and 2010 the bindings were matched with their original contents, a photographic inventory was created of the bindings and the watermarks of their contents, and the bindings were cataloged and rehoused. This online catalogue contains an inventory of the bindings in the collection and the information associated with them.

Highlights from the Willman Spawn Collection were placed on display in an exhibit in the Search Room of the Hall of Records in the fall of 2010. A public online version of that exhibit is available here.
