Description

On August 26, 1814, after the capture and burning of Washington, DC by the British, President James Madison found refuge in the town of Brookeville, Maryland. His stay made the town "U.S. Capital for a Day," a title the town still proudly claims today. This project chronicles the War of 1812's impact on Brookeville and other parts of Montgomery County, as well as the people, businesses, and industry that made up the town's community.

Public access to the project is through the Brookeville 1814 research website.

Research collection includes notes and project files.
