Maryland Geological Survey, bound volumes of published reports, reviews, and maps.
Series 1 includes:
- 14 Maryland Geological Survey Volumes: Among the earliest reports of the Maryland Geological Survey (MGS), the 14 Volumes were published between 1897 and 1941.
- Each contains several parts - stand-alone reports - about some aspect of Maryland geology. Broadly defined, “geology” includes not only such topics as the State’s physical features and mineral resources, but also state boundary delineations and road construction. After publication of a Volume, the Survey sometimes issued a separate, bound publication of one of the parts, though the separate publication was identical in every respect, including page numbering, to the report as it appeared originally in a Volume. The following is a link to a combined list of illustrations for the 14 MGS Volumes Color scans of the full volumes are available under the Collection Inventory link.
- 16 bound volumes published by the Maryland Geological Survey (MGS) between 1900 and 1969.
- The 16 County Reports cover 18 of Maryland’s 23 counties: Allegany (1900), Anne Arundel (1917), Baltimore (1929), Calvert (1907), Carroll and Frederick (1946), Cecil (1902), Charles (1948), Garrett (1902), Harford (1969), Howard and Montgomery (1964), Kent (1926), Prince George’s (1911), Queen Anne’s (1926), St. Mary’s (1907), Talbot (1926), and Washington (1951). At a minimum, each report contains several sections focused on the geology and mineral resources of one or two counties. Reports published prior to 1960 usually also include sections on the geography (physiography), soils, climate, water resources (hydrography), magnetic declination, and forests (flora and fauna) of the county. Many of the illustrations in the reports are photographs of views (e.g., the Potomac River below Harpers Ferry), rock outcrops, characteristic fossils, buildings, bridges, forest stands, etc. For some of the counties, County Atlases - separate map sets related to the various features described in the County Reports - were also produced.
- 12 Maryland Geological Survey "Systematic Reports" published from 1901 to 1923
- 38 Maryland Geological Survey Bulletins published from 1944-1995
Series 2 contains digital scans from a hand-written report entitled The Patapsco Project compiled by H.S. Shryock, which documents the Baltimore City’s Department of Public Works investigation of water and water power rights – essentially, the active, inactive, and ruined mills and dams – along the Patapsco River and its tributaries in Maryland between 1932 and 1933.
