Description
This collection contains the early records and correspondence of the Maryland Commission on Artistic Property and the extensive archival research and notes of John W. Sause, Jr. (1933-2021), a former Queen Anne’s County Circuit Court Judge and a former Secretary and Chair of the Commission on Artistic Property (1969-1975). The Commission on Artistic Property records relate to the acquisition, preservation, and display of State artwork managed by the Commission, including meeting minutes, correspondence, insurance policies, appraisals, and listings of Governor and Judiciary Portraits. The archival research focused on Queen Anne’s County, Maryland, land history, conveyances, and ownership from the 1600s to the late 20th century. Specific focuses include research on the land history for plots of land in the town of Centerville in Queen Anne’s County, the history of the Godwin-Jacobs House (Lot 5) in Centerville, and the establishment of William Claiborne’s trading post on Kent Island in 1631 and its subsequent land disputes in court. There is also some research into Talbot County land history and ownership and two photograph prints by A. Aubrey Bodine of the Hall of Records and Old Treasury buildings in Annapolis, MD. Some of the families and names that appear frequently in Mr. Sause’s land research include: Matthew Dockery; Richard T. Earle; Thomas Emory; Robert Goldsbourough; Richard Hall; John Hawkins; William Hopper I and II; Elizabeth Nicholson; Richard Sweatnam; and Christopher Wilkinson (b.1663-d.1729). A large portion of his archival research was conducted at the Maryland State Archives and this collection includes copies of original land records such as wills, deeds, and court cases held by the archive. Materials include paper, books, newspaper clippings, note cards, lantern slides, and a map.
