This collection contains letters of Madeleine LeMoyne Ellicott (1856-1945), a famous Maryland suffragist who was highly active in securing female suffrage through the Maryland League of Women Voters. She was President of the Maryland League for twenty years. Madeleine LeMoyne Ellicott's collection mostly consists of letters to Alice Leonard Gaule, a close friend who lived in Zurich and who she met while studying there. It also contains additional correspondence between younger generations of the Ellicott and Gaule families.
Madeleine Ellicott and Alice Gaule wrote letters to each other in German between 1898-1914. The original letters are now in the Medical-Historical Archives at the University of Zurich. This collection contains typed translations of these letters made by Alice Leonard Gaule's granddaughter, Roxanna Biber Nagosky, discussing topics such as suffrage, World War I, the passing of the 19th Amendment, and the Spanish flu.
Madeleine Ellicott also corresponded with Madeleine Gaule Biber, Alice's daughter and Ellicott's goddaughter. Their letters address family matters, the political situations prior to World War II, and life during World War II. Finally, the collection contains correspondence mainly discussing family matters to "Aunt" Madeleine Gaule from Valcoulon LeMoyne Ellicott, Madeleine Ellicott's son, and his wife, Mary Gould Ellicott.
