Description

Documents and fragments of documents from the 1880s found in the former residence of Dr. Abraham Streett Baldwin (1825-1906). He bought the former Archibald Gittings House in the 1850s. Baldwin owned a general merchandising business specializing in grain, fertilizer, flour, and feed. He was also an investor in the railroad and supporter of a proposed line between Baltimore and Delta. The documents concern sales of goods from Baldwin's business, the Maryland Central Railroad, and Philadelphia, Wilmington, and Baltimore Railroad Company.

The documents were presumably found during the house renovation by Mr. & Mrs. A. L. Bartlett during the 1980s. The Gittings-Baldwin House is a property in Gunpowder Falls State Park and was one of the earliest examples of public-private partnership in Maryland Resident Curatorship Program in the 1980s.
