Description
Digital images from portrait reportedly of Simon Retallick (framed), Pastel on paper, c. 1790, approximately 9" x 7" on deposit for digital imaging project with Maryland Commission on Artistic Property.

Current research into the origin of the portrait cannot firmly identify the subject of the pastel. The earliest specific identification of the portrait is not until 1981 by Historic Annapolis, Inc. who catalogs it as Simon Retallick Sr. (1752-1799). However, there is no mention of the portrait in the probate of Simon Retallick Sr., or any evidence that the portrait might be of Simon Retallick Jr. (1779-1824).
Another possible subject of the pastel may be the son-in-law of Simon Retallick Sr., William Rawlings (d.1836), who is the only candidate documented at this time as having a portrait, as mentioned in the inventory of Mary Brewer (1821-1888). The early 19th century appearance of the subject’s costume also suggests that the portrait may date later than the 1790s
