A label from a former exhibition at the Rare Book Library, Diocese of Washington reads, "A committee of the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge (SPCK), working from 1705 until 1729, was able to establish sixty-four libraries in the poorer parishes of England for the use of the incumbent and his successors."
