COMMENTS: In 1820, a writ of habeas corpus was directed to George Medcalf "to produce the bodies of Araminta Chew and her child Debby" to the Chancery Court; Medcalf explained that although Araminta had filed a petition for freedom in Anne Arundel County Court saying she had been manumitted by deed, the court had declared the unrecorded deed "invalid and inoperative"; but he added that in 1815 his wife had sold the slaves to John Davis "who has since manumitted them"; Medcalf sought to recover slaves SOURCE: MSA S512-930
