Preface states:
"Bill O'Dell acquired the copy of the Smooth Deck Log of the USS MARYLAND from the National Archives. [The log] covers the time between 1 November, 1941 and 1 July, 1945. It states the position and operation of the Maryland with the few exceptions when it was evidently recorded under strict censorship. Also, the dates between 1 August, 1942 and 21 August, 1942 were missing. When the ships location was not listed, it was estimated from the History Book of the USS MARYLAND 1941-1945. Also, this copy has been edited and all pages that had no names or information of interest were eliminated."
