The following 3 slaves ran away on May 15, 1841:

John(Born 1814), age 27, 5'10", ran with 2 siblings, "The side(?) of one of his hams recently hurt so as to cause a ridge protuberance. He has long been my vegetable market man, a plain carpenter and joiner; has been hired at the Potomac Fisheries for several years past; strong natural sense; believed can read and write"

Dumpty(Born 1818), John's brother, about 23 years old, not quite as tall as his brother John

Louisa(Born 1811), their sister, age 30, has a free husband, named Jim Butler

September 2, 1842 ad

-John ran away in the middle of May 1841, he was a great mechanical man, believed can read and write, long had been Maddox's vegetable market man, believed a scar on his leg from a cat, another under his left eye, he carried considerable cash that he had stolen from Maddox with him, a variety of clothes, and a new trunk

The owner, Notley Maddox, had 7 slaves who ran away. He lived in PG County, near DC
Maddox was close enough to Washignton that he told people to write to him at the Washignton post office
Maddox was close enough to Washignton that he asked for the slaves to be lodged in Washington jail

October 5, 1842 ad

Forged certificates of freedom, with good intentions of official seals, are common

Maddox writes "I have now five males and one female that have left me without cause known to me"

He was wiling to pay $200 for each man, if taken in a free state, and fifty for Louisa, the lone woman - use this as a teaser on the case studies page Biography linked here

March 23, 1839 ad

Alfred(Born 1816), at age 23, ran away with his brother from his master, Notley Maddox, on March 17, 1839. He took other clothes with him.
Alfred was born in 1816

Jerry(Born 1818), Alfred's brother, at age 21, ran away a couple days before March 17, 1839 (when Alfred ran away). He took other clothes with him.
Jerry was born in 1818

Maddox believed that they were hired as free "by some gentlemen of the Potomac fisheries, or public works in or about the District of Columbia."

April 4, 1839 ad They took clothes with them.

They have a manumitted father in Washington by the name of Peter Johnson

May 19, 1841

-Alfred and his brother, Jerry, age 25 and 23, left in March of 1839

-*I have no doubt they have forged papers, and are now passing under other names.

September 2, 1842
