Description
Online exhibition and research notes relating to A RECORD OF HEROISM: The Maryland State Fair for U.S. Soldier Relief, April 19, 1864-April 30, 1864.

The 1864 Maryland State Fair for U.S. Soldier Relief, or as it is more commonly known, the Baltimore Sanitary Fair represented a statewide effort to raise funds for the care of sick and wounded US soldiers and demonstrate the patriotism of loyal Marylanders. This web exhibition uncovers the major role of Maryland's Unionist women in the planning, fundraising, and execution of this event. In doing so, it provides important evidence of their vital homefront role.
