Solomon Etting (1764-1847) petitioned the Maryland General Assembly in 1797 to give Jews the rights of citizenship, but his petition was at first ignored. Not until 1826, however, did the General Assembly pass the "Jew Bill", giving equal rights to the Jewish citizens of Maryland. Etting later won a seat on the Baltimore City council.
