File contains newspaper clippings concerning patriotic and war work performed by women in Worcester County. Not all of the clippings were dated or identified.
Some topics of the clippings include food conservation and preservation, book collections, collection of fruit stones and nut shells to be made into charcoal for gas masks, education initiatives, infant health, and knitting socks. Several articles discussed money raising activities through the sales of Liberty War Bonds, thrift and War Savings stamps, and special subscriptions such as Armenian-Syrian relief. Many local and state residents are mentioned with their contribution to the war work as well as a few wedding announcements and obituaries. Several articles mentioned the influenza from cancelling meetings to remedies to behaviors which help spread the disease. In addition there are articles discussing the continued work of committees after armistice, the status of women after the war, as well as the creation of a new committee to establish a War Memorial. File also contains receipts, letters from the County Extension Agent, a letter from the Henry Watson’s Children Aid Society, as well as letters from the War Loan Organization. There is a letter asking Miss Handy to organize for the election of Herbert Hoover and another from Governor Harrington asking her to take Mrs. Calvin B. Taylor’s position on the Maryland Council of Defense. Elena C. Carpenter of Chicago sent her two notes and John Benson, also in Chicago, sent her two letters concerning Mrs. Gray. There is a picture postcard of the Maternity Home in Evanston Illinois Hospital and a program from The Woman’s Club of Kensington. |
