Treasurer of the Western Shore Records
The Ledgers [S607-3, 4] and Day Books [S602-3, 4] together record at least some of the money received by the State of Maryland from the U.S. Government in payment of the state's
war claims.
Three payments are specifically noted as being in partial payment of Maryland's war claims. Note that correspondence in the Kerr papers and State Papers refers to one $40,000
payment made as an advance (probably the one received in October 1818); there is no correspondence about another payment in January 1819.
1 October 1818, $40,000 (Ledger C, p. 231; Day Book C, p. 367)
30 January 1819, $40,000 (Ledger C, p. 237; Day Book C, p. 376)
17 November 1826, $10,424.49 (Ledger D, p. 36, Day Book D, p. 32)
In addition, one payment is for the amount indicated in several letters in the Kerr papers (Folders 29-30):
30 November 1821, $94,710.24 (Ledger C, p. 237, Day Book C, p. 459)
There are thus payments of $185,134.73 identified as reimbursement for Maryland's war claims.
There are other payments to Maryland from the U.S. for large amounts that aren't explained. These are separate from several recurring, regular payments that the state received
(quarterly payments of $4,519.03 and $2,513.27 from investment income, for example):
31 October 1818, $40,000 (Ledger C, p. 237, Day Book C, p. 371)
30 November 1819, $40,000 (Ledger C, p. 237, Day Book C, p. 399)
30 November 1820, $100,000 (Ledger C, p. 237, Day Book C, p. 428)
30 November 1822, $5,443.33 (Ledger C, p. 237, Day Book C, p. 495)
