Description
Video interview conducted by Dan Ramirez on September 19, 2025 with Saul Serpas at the Hyattsville Branch Library, Prince George's County. This oral history was captured as part of The Latino History Project. Saul Serpas moved from El Salvador to Montgomery County in 1989. He lived near the border with Prince George’s County and frequently visited Prince George’s County due to its growing Latino community. After completing his high school education at Springbrook High, Serpas wanted to serve his community after helping at his local church as a teenager. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Grantham University. After six months at the Maryland State Police Academy, he was assigned to District 1 (Hyattsville), which has a large Latino population, and made a strong impression as a Spanish speaker and translator. Serpas has dedicated his time as a police officer to breaking barriers between the Latino community and the police department. Currently, Serpas has over twenty years of law enforcement service and is the commander of District 1 (Hyattsville). Duration: 22:42
