Description
Pledge of Parole to His Excellency General Howe, 27 January 1777, written and signed by James McHenry, Surgeon of the Fifth Pennsylvania Battalion. Dr. McHenry was captured in November 1776 at Fort Washington, New York by the British Army. The document is his statement of parole swearing to be a noncombatant until a prisoner exchange could be made. McHenry was released from parole in March 1777.

Digital copy, letter from Alexander Hamilton, Secretary of General George Washington, from Headquarters [Valley Forge, PA] to Prisoner of War James McHenry, 15 March 1778. This letter informs Dr. McHenry that he is to be freed in a prisoner exchange. Hamilton asks for any information that will enable the Americans to exchange additional prisoners.
