Collection History
(Upper Marlboro, Prince George's County: George W. Wilson) The Marlboro' Gazette, and Prince George's Advertiser ceased publication in 1925. It was published weekly. Title history based on April 17, 1846. It was also published as the Marlborough Gazette, and Prince George's Advertiser from [March 30, 1864-March 24, 1869] and the Marlboro' Gazette. The newspaper continues the Marlboro Gazette, and Prince George's County Advertiser (Upper Marlboro: 1836) and merged with the Prince George's Enquirer and Southern Maryland Advertiser (Upper Marlboro: 1882) to form the Enquirer-Gazette (Upper Marlboro: 1925). For a time, the newspaper must have been suspended during the Civil War. A note in the Prince Georgian, January 6, 1882, indicated Wilson had been imprisoned for denoucing the Federal draft laws. Wilson continued as editor unitl his death in January 1877 and was succeeded by his son, Ignatius S. Wilson. I. S. Wilson was publisher until his death on December 8, 1897. His wife, Mary E. Wilson, and son, Charles I. Wilson continued the Marlboro' Gazette until they sold it to the Prince George's Enquirer, January 30, 1925. The papers were combined to form the Enquirer-Gazette. Issues of this newspaper are from the collection of the Enoch Pratt Free Library. These were deposited at the Pratt by the publishers of the Enquirer-Gazette, Upper Marlboro.
