Legal correspondence, letterbooks, documents and photographs relating to Emerson C. Harrington (1864-1945), Governor of Maryland (1916-1920)
The collection consists of letters received for the most part at Governor Harrington’s law office in Cambridge between 1907 and 1921. They span years prior to Harrington’s term as Governor when he was Comptroller of the Treasury, through his campaign and during his term in Annapolis. There are six boxes and five letter books with contents filed either by date or by addressee; a box of letters filed by topic; and a set of four volumes, The Tercentenary History of Maryland edited by Henry Fletcher Powell, Clarke Publishing, Chicago, 1925. Topics include those of the general business of any law firm: inquiries regarding specific cases, their dispositions, accounts, settlements due, debt collection, etc. There is correspondence of a political nature: votes; requests for consideration for appointments; recommendations for appointments; suggestions as to where support for various causes may be found or warnings as to where there may be problems. There are a number of congratulatory letters following Harrington’s election. There is also a little personal correspondence, some letters from the Governor’s son at St. John’s College to his father while in office.
