Description
Digital image collection of letters, drawings, photographs, family records and ephemera pertaining to the life of Confederate soldier John J. Omenhausser (1831-1877). Omenhausser, who was captured in 1864 and served nearly a year's captivity at Point Lookout, is famous for his drawings and sketches depicting everyday life as a prisoner of war. His sketchbooks reside in several public institutions in the United States.

History
John J. Omenhausser enlisted at Richmond, Virginia, April 21, 1861, in 2nd Company A., 46th Regiment Virginia Infantry, for the war. He was mustered into service as a Private. On June 16, 1864, he was captured "near Petersburg," Virginia, and was taken to Point Lookout, Maryland, where he subscribed to the Oath of Allegiance and was released June 9, 1865.
