Description
Public documents from the Civil War era donated by the Friends of Maryland State Archives. This collection contains petitions to the Senate and Legislature signed by Maryland citizens and pertaining to legislation in the General Assembly's special session in Frederick called by Governor Thomas Hicks in 1861. (five separate documents)

This collection also includes eighteen letters from Colonel Thomas H. Ruger's (1833-1907) correspondence regarding the arrest of pro-secession Democrats by the Union Army in September 1861. Colonel Ruger was the commanding officer in charge of arresting Maryland legislators under orders from President Lincoln to prevent them voting for the state's secession.
