Portrait of Jacob Epstein, businessman and philanthropist, at his deskEpstein, who became one of the wealthiest and most generous Baltimoreans, arrived in Baltimore in 1882 as a penniless seventeen-year-old. He opened his business at 48 West Barre Street retailing pots, pans, and clothing in South Baltimore, living over the store. That tiny business would grow to become one of the largest of its kind in America: the Baltimore Bargain House.
