Description
Letter: To "Ted" (Theodore Corner) from "George" (George Washington Corner). Baltimore. George received Ted's letter and is glad to hear that his vistors are enjoying themselves. Ma (Sarah Johnson Corner) is visiting him, as well as Mary Robinson. Captain Pettiborne also went to visit, but went up the Severn River to deliver some empty boxes first. Coal prices have gone up $8. Sis (likely Mary J. Corner) and Bell (Bell Shaffer?) went to Lexington Market. The newspapers say that rebels are coming over the Potomac, either to Pennsylvania or Washington. General Shenck continues to build fortifications around the Baltimore, and putting up earthworks around the Maryland Hospital, though they appear "flimsy." George thinks that if the rebels do attack that it would be better if the union troops let them in, as it would be too difficult to defend if fthere was a large force. Privateers are damaging shipping under the nose of the Navy. The family is doing well, and George will pay Matt's bill."
