Description
Letter: To "Ted" (Theodore Corner) from "George" (George Washington Corner). Baltimore. George has not heard from Ted in a few days and expects that the rain has interfered with the harvest. It is settled that Vicksburg has surrendered, and Confederate prospects don't seem great. Lee favors crossing into Virginia without another battle if possible, but circumstances are against him. Gold prices are down again to 30.5 a 31 in New York. Thomas Corner went to Gettysburg to look after Colonel Herbert, a relative of Sally's (Sallie Cromwell), who was wounded. Will Cromwell and Rich Cromwell went previously and are coming back, but Thomas will stay for about two weeks. The wounded are arriving every day, with Federal counts up to 12000. Bell (Bell Shaffer?) had another daughter and is doing well. Sis (Mary J. Corner) stayed with her. A letter is enclosed from Sis to Rach (Rachel Shaffer) as well as an account record. No news from Captain Clarke or Captain Pettibone.
