Dunlap's Maryland Gazette, or, The Baltimore General Advertiser began publication May 2, 1775 [v. 1, no. 1] and ceased September 8, 1788 [v. 4, no. 176]. It was published weekly. It was also published as Dunlap's Maryland Gazette, or, the Baltimore General Advertiser, May 2, 1775-July 4, 1775; Dunlap's Maryland Gazette; Baltimore General Advertiser, July 11, 1775; Dunlap's Maryland Gazette, or, the Baltimore General Advertiser, July 18, 1775-September 1, 1778; Dunlap's Maryland Gazette, May-June 1778; Dunlap's Maryland Gazette, or, Baltimore General Advertiser, September 8, 1778. The newspaper was continued by Maryland Gazette, and Baltimore General Advertiser (Baltimore: 1778).
John Dunlap, a Philadelphia printer, established a Baltimore office in 1775 and issued Dunlap's Maryland Gazette May 2, 1775. Dunlap's Baltimore press was managed by James Hayes, Jr., who took over as proprietor after the issue of September 8, 1778. Hayes continued the paper, published as the Maryland Gazette thereafter.
