Collection History
(Rockville, Montgomery County: M. Fields) The Montgomery County Sentinel began publication August 11, 1855 [v. 1, no. 1] and ceased August 8, 1974 [119th year, no. 51]. It was published weekly. Publication was suspended from October 17, 1862 until November 7, 1862 and spring and summer of 1864. From August 31, 1972-1974, it was published at Gaithersburg. The issue of September 29, 1955 was also called Century edition. The newspaper was continued by the Sentinel Montgomery County (Gaithersburg: 1974). Archives' collection includes issue for August 11, 1855 [MSA SC 884] and October 4, 1934 [MSA SC 2813]. For abstracts, see: Mary Gordon Malloy, Genealogical Abstracts Montgomery County Sentinel 1855-1899 (Rockville: Montgomery County Historical Society, 1986). Issues of this newspaper are from the collection of the Enoch Pratt Free Library, filmed for the Rockville Library in 1960 with funds provided by the Rockville Library Association in the name of John W.
