(Princess Anne, Somerset County: Fontaine & Dashiell)
The Marylander and Herald began publication in 1898 and ceased December 26, 1984 [v. 159, no. 39]. It was published weekly. Title history based on April 4, 1899 [v. 1, no. 36]. It was published as the Marylander & Herald October 7, 1982-1984. The newspaper was formed by the union of the Marylander (Princess Anne: 1881) and the Somerset Herald (Princess Anne: 1861) and was continued by the Somerset Herald (Princess Anne: 1985).
According to Newspapers and Newspapermen of Maryland, Fontaine and Dashiell were the owners of the paper. Few issues survive prior to December 13, 1913 when a fire destroyed the Marylander and Herald offfice, then occupied by W. H. Dashiell and owned by C. W. Fontaine. William Dashiell appears as owner and editor in 1912 and remained until September 12, 1916, when Theodore A. Walker became editor and business manager. Walker stayed with the paper until at least 1921. The Somerset Publishing Company, incorporated April 23, 1923, must have bought the paper from Dashiell. James E. Byrd, Sr., one of the officers of the Somerset Publishing Company, appears as editor in 1924. He sold his interest in the paper to his sons, James E. Byrd, Jr. and Clarence L. Byrd. The two brothers published the paper until 1973 when Clarence L. Byrd sold his interest to J. Bryan Byrd, son of James E. Byrd, Jr. The Marylander and Herald was purchased by Atlantic Publications, Inc. of Accomac, Virginia in December 1983.
