| (Union Bridge, Carroll County: Edward Reisler)
The Carroll News began publication May 20, 1886 and ceased 1898[?]. It was published weekly. Title history based on August 10, 1889 [v. 4, no. 13].
The Carroll News was established May 20, 1886 by Edward Reisler according to an article in the News of May 14, 1892. The News had been preceded by several weekly papers in Union Bridge; the Voice, the Index, and the Era, none of which proved successful. Reisler sold the Carroll News to J. Harry Drechsler on September 11, 1897 when he left Union Bridge to become principal of the high school in Easton, Maryland. Drechsler continued the News but must have gone out of business in 1898 or 1899. A note in a Westminster newspaper, the American Sentinel, September 23, 1899, reported petitions had been circulated among those interested in having another newspaper started in Union Bridge. Shortly thereafter, the Pilot was established.
