| Springfield Church was organized in August 1835 by those citizens of Anne Arundel and Baltimore Counties who sought to erect a Presbyterian Church and Academy in the northern area of Baltimore County. It was incorporated as the First Presbyterian Church of Carroll County and styled the "Springfield Presbyterian Church", under care of the Baltimore Presbyterey of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in the United States. The church ediface was erected in 1836 on a few acres of land deeded by George Patterson, first president of the Board of Trustees, from h is large estate outside of Sykesville. The original Board members, besides Patterson, were William Baer, Rezin D. Hewitt, Howes Goldsborough, W.W. Warfield, Eli Hewitt, Nathan Brown and James Greer.
The church may have been associated during its first years with Union Chapel. Between 1857 to 1867, Mt. Parran was on circuit with Springfield.
Until 1896 the Springfield Institute or Academy, belonging to the church, was leased as a day school, but in that year the property was exchanged for other land by Gov. Frank Brown, a brother of Mrs. George Patterson. Sale of the farm land benefited the church and the nearby cemetery property. |
